Ear, nose and throat (ENT): what the specialty covers

ENT specialists treat problems of the ears, nose, throat, head and neck. Common conditions they see, and how they work with other specialists.

ENT stands for ear, nose and throat. The specialty, also called otolaryngology, deals with the medical and surgical treatment of problems of the ears, nose, throat, and the wider head and neck area: the nasal passages and sinuses, the voice box (larynx), the mouth and pharynx, and neck structures such as the thyroid and salivary glands.

Common ear conditions

  • tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • earwax blockage
  • fluid behind the eardrum (serous otitis)
  • inflammation of the outer ear canal
  • acute middle ear infection
  • hearing loss

Common nose conditions

  • loss or change of the sense of smell
  • sinusitis, acute or chronic
  • breathing problems caused by the nasal structure
  • rhinoplasty, for function or appearance

Common throat conditions

  • snoring and sleep apnoea
  • pharyngitis
  • tonsillitis, which sometimes leads to a tonsillectomy

Working with other specialists

ENT specialists are trained to treat infections, tumours and injuries of the head and neck, and they also perform reconstructive and cosmetic surgery when needed. They often work alongside other doctors: neurosurgeons for skull base conditions, plastic surgeons for facial deformities, eye doctors for problems near the eye, oral surgeons for the jaw and teeth, allergists for sinus disease, dermatologists for skin cancers, and oncologists for head and neck cancers. With paediatricians and family doctors, they treat infections and congenital conditions in children and adults.
