A Bone Marrow Transplant (also called “Stem Cell Transplant”) is a medical procedure which replaces healthy blood stem cells with damaged or diseased ones. Bone morrow is basically the spongy tissue inside the bone which creates; platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells. Healthy cells may be obtained from your own body (autologous transplant) or from a donor (allogeneic transplant) for the transplant. Prior to the transplant, you will get several tests to discover the type of cells that you need. Additionally, you may need to get some radiation or chemotherapy in order to kill all marrow or cancer cells before getting the new stem cells. This may be a hard and long procedure that needs to be closely monitored to prevent any complications.
